    ALTA Illinois presents:

    Impactful Writing Instruction:
Supporting Students with Dyslexia and Related Challenges Through Assessment and Intervention

    $30 Members | $45 Non-Members | 1.5 CEs

    --------------

Children with cognitive or language-based learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, or traumatic brain injury, often struggle with written expression. Because writing is a complex process that relies on the coordination of multiple cognitive and linguistic systems, these challenges can significantly hinder academic success if not identified and addressed early.

This presentation examines how the principles of structured reading instruction can inform effective writing instruction, emphasizing the reciprocal relationship between reading and writing. Participants will explore the developmental trajectory of writing, the cognitive-linguistic processes that support it, and the specific challenges faced by students with language-based learning difficulties.

Through the use of case studies, the session will introduce evidence-based informal assessment strategies, including both qualitative and quantitative tools, that can be used to create holistic writing profiles. These profiles will help educators tailor writing instruction to meet each student’s unique needs.

By the end of the session, participants will be equipped to:

    1. Identify early signs of writing difficulties in students with language-based learning challenges.
    2. Implement a range of informal assessments to evaluate students’ written expression.
    3. Use assessment data to design targeted, effective writing instruction and intervention strategies.

Join us Thursday, September 25, 2025, from 6:30PM - 8:00PM CT or register to view the recording.

ALTA ALABAMA & ALTA PENNSYLVANIA present:

HOW GRAMMAR + WRITING = SUCCESSFUL INSTRUCTION
    Presented by: Andrea THOmAS, M.Ed., CALT-QI, C-SLDS

    $25 Members | $35 Non-Members | 1.5 CEs

    --------------

Teaching grammar in isolation often leads to rote memorization with little transfer to actual writing. However, when grammar instruction is integrated with sentence writing, students develop a deeper understanding of syntax and learn to apply grammatical concepts in meaningful ways. This session explores how pairing grammar with writing instruction supports the construction and expansion of sentences, while also reinforcing reading fluency and comprehension through phrasing and structure, Attendees will discover explicit, multisensory strategies for teaching grammar and written expression at both the oral and written levels. Through practical modeling and research-based examples, this session provides immediately applicable tools that can be use in whole-group, small-group, or individualized instruction to support student growth in language and literacy.

    ALTA GREAT LAKES presents:

The Impact of Cognitive Load on Instructional Design
    Presented by: Jamey Peavler, Ed.D., OGA-FIT, C-SLDS

    $40 Members | $50 Non-Members | 2.0 CEs

    --------------

Working memory, the gatekeeper of learning, plays a crucial role in the learning process. Understanding its limitations can shed light on why learning can be more labor-intensive for some students than others. This understanding is key when students transition from acquisition to fluency, from fluency to generalization, and from generalization to adaptation. Educators and instructional designers who understand the importance of working memory can develop effective instructional strategies and materials that facilitate learning, thereby empowering their students.

    ABOUT THE PRESENTER:

    Jamey Peavler, Ed.D., OGA-FIT, C-SLDS

Jamey Peavler is an Assistant Professor and Program Facilitator in the Mount St. Joseph University Reading Science Graduate Program. Before joining The Mount, Jamey served as the Director of Training for the M.A. Rooney Foundation. She has more than 20 years of teaching experience as an elementary and preschool teacher. Jamey reviews higher-education textbooks and teacher licensure exams for the National Council for Teacher Quality (NCTQ). Jamey is a Certified Fellow-in-Training with the Orton-Gillingham Academy and an International Dyslexia Association Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist. She currently serves on the board for The Reading League’s Indiana Chapter. Her research interests include instructional design, the impact of spaced practice and interleaving to support effortful retrieval and retention of information, the role of oral language and syntactic awareness on comprehension and written expression, and foundational skills for supporting literacy in the early childhood setting.
