This dynamic online workshop bridges theory and practice, equipping educators with practical tools and strategies to address common challenges in reading comprehension instruction. Ideal for all teachers, from elementary to secondary classrooms, this session focuses on helping students overcome hurdles in linking foundational skills with comprehension, ensuring that all learners can succeed. Special emphasis will be placed on planning and scaffolding support for students with dyslexia during reading comprehension, including addressing word reading difficulties. Participants will explore structured literacy practices and evidence-based reading models while engaging with ready-to-use examples and templates to support their instructional planning. By the end of the session, educators will have actionable strategies and resources to create inclusive and effective reading instruction.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Dr. Emily A. Fisher is an Assistant Professor of Practice in Teaching Learning and Teacher Education and Co-Director of the Kit and Dick Schmoker Reading Center at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. She specializes in preparing preservice teachers to teach children who struggle with reading and writing. Dr. Fisher earned a dual degree in Elementary Education and English Literature from Kansas State University with a middle-level language arts endorsement in 2007. She obtained her Master's in 2016 and PhD in 2022 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She has 12 years of practical teaching and instructional coaching experience. Dr. Fisher is passionate about preparing teachers to support and help students experience success with reading in the classroom, as well as providing professional development for in-service teachers to continue refining their teaching practice.
