ABSTRACT
This practical, 1.5-hour workshop teaches a systematic method for decoding long, multi-syllabic words by using suffixes to identify the stressed syllable. Participants will learn to break words into manageable, pronounceable parts and recombine them into fluent, recognizable wholes — then apply this same technique with their own students. Each participant will leave with a complete electronic teacher's guide, including an answer key and student practice sheets covering 24 lessons, ready for immediate classroom use. This workshop is best suited for teachers whose students have a basic foundation in structured literacy but continue to struggle with decoding multi-syllabic words.
OBJECTIVES
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
Identify suffixes in multi-syllabic words and use them to locate the stressed syllable.
Segment long words into syllables using this suffix-based decoding method, producing pronounceable word parts.
Blend the syllables back together into a fluently recognizable whole word.
Apply the 24-lesson sequence (teacher's guide, answer key, and student practice sheets) to deliver this instruction to students with a structured literacy foundation.
Teach the method independently, using the provided materials to replicate the decoding process with their own students.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER:
Susan Mayes, ALTA Arizona president, is an experienced educator who transitioned from high school science teaching to specializing in structured literacy and the science of reading over two decades ago. Trained in Orton-Gillingham and certified with ALTA, she has extensive experience working with students with learning disabilities and currently runs her private practice, Mayes Literacy Therapy.
