Investigating English Spelling with SWI

This 3-part PD series will help participants deepen their knowledge of both the “what” and the “how” of teaching the English writing system. We will explore questions such as: “How are words built?” “Are words that look the same related?” “What are graphemes?” “How can I feel confident while learning along with my students?” and more! We will demonstrate options for investigating these questions (and others!) using the SWI framework, with opportunities to practice with feedback and guidance from us. Expect to complete about an hour of work ahead of time (a video with a study guide supplied by us) as well as homework in between sessions.

Participants will:
Learn the “big ideas” and guiding concepts of the English writing system.
Understand how to investigate the spelling of English words with students and relate them to the big ideas.
Practice building an investigation with support and feedback from the presenters.
