Empowerment Is a Path, Not a Moment: Integrating Self-Advocacy in Instructional Routines - 1.0 CE

Casey Harrison, LDT, CSLDS, CALT

Empowerment should be understood not as a singular breakthrough or milestone, but as a carefully supported process developed through intentional instruction, language, and relationships over time. This session encourages Certified Academic Language Therapists (CALT) and Certified Academic Language Practitioners (CALP) to reconceptualize self-advocacy as a daily pathway cultivated in dyslexia therapy, leading to cognitive independence and sustained learning agency.

Drawing on evidence-based practice and the integrated framework outlined in Teaching Beyond the Diagnosis, this session examines how therapists can authentically embed self-advocacy within instructional routines while maintaining structure, rigor, and therapeutic intensity. Participants will analyze how empowerment develops across different ages and stages, progressing from supported awareness and co-regulation to independent strategy use, self-understanding, and ownership of learning.

Utilizing a gradual release model of self-advocacy, the presentation demonstrates how instructional decisions and therapist language can intentionally foster cognitive independence. This approach helps students identify effective learning supports, articulate their needs, and apply strategies with increasing autonomy. Attendees will further explore how these practices cultivate learning agency, enabling students to participate actively rather than remain passive recipients of instruction.
