Social Justice / NJCLD — Prison Pipeline & Dyslexia Advocacy - 1.5 CEs
Lynne Fitzhugh, Ph.D., Monica McHale-Small, Ph.D., Rachel Arnold, CALT, C-SLDS
Students with learning disabilities are significantly overrepresented in the U.S. prison system, with research showing they are more likely to face school exclusion and incarceration than their peers. This session explores the connection between unidentified learning disabilities, inadequate reading instruction, and the school-to-prison pipeline.
Drawing on the National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities’ framework, the presentation examines three contributing factors: school failure, susceptibility factors, and differential treatment, with attention to how intersectionality intensifies disparities for students of color with disabilities.
The session highlights practical solutions grounded in the science of reading and structured literacy, including universal screening, early identification, trauma-informed instruction, and evidence-based intervention. Participants will also explore the role of teacher preparation, specialized support staff, and policy alignment in creating more equitable learning environments.
Educators, administrators, and policymakers will leave with research-backed strategies to improve literacy outcomes and disrupt pathways that lead to the criminalization of students with learning differences.
