Title: Developing Young Writers Using a Multisensory Structured Approach
Location: VIRTUAL
Date: 11/13/2025
Time: 7:00PM - 8:30PM
Hosting: ALTA North Carolina Chapter
Description:

This session presents a practical, step-by-step approach for teaching beginning writers in the upper elementary years—especially those with language learning differences. Attendees will learn how to build writing skills from the ground up, moving from the word and sentence level to more complex paragraph-level strategies.

Using the I Do – We Do – You Do model, presenters Anna Hall and Mary Jo van Dalen from the Key School in Asheville, NC, will share how they integrated the evidence-based Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) into their structured literacy lessons. Participants will discover the key factors behind this approach’s success with a group of fifth graders, explore techniques for scaffolding the writing process without overwhelming students, and leave with practical tools from their Multisensory Structured Approach to Reading & Writing project.
