Teaching grammar in isolation often leads to rote memorization with little transfer to actual writing. However, when grammar instruction is integrated with sentence writing, students develop a deeper understanding of syntax and learn to apply grammatical concepts in meaningful ways. This session explores how pairing grammar with writing instruction supports the construction and expansion of sentences, while also reinforcing reading fluency and comprehension through phrasing and structure, Attendees will discover explicit, multisensory strategies for teaching grammar and written expression at both the oral and written levels. Through practical modeling and research-based examples, this session provides immediately applicable tools that can be use in whole-group, small-group, or individualized instruction to support student growth in language and literacy.


ABOUT THE PRESENTER:

Andrea Thomas, M.Ed., CALT-QI, SLDS

Andrea Thomas serves as the Director of Online Certification Programs at Neuhaus Education Center. She holds a Master of Education degree from Southern Methodist University and a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication from Texas A&M University.

After completing SMU’s Learning Therapy Program, Andrea founded a private practice in Northwest Ohio, where she specialized in language therapy. She has extensive experience providing therapy in both public and private schools and has served as an adjunct professor at Lourdes University.

In addition to her professional practice, Andrea has been an active leader in the field, serving on the Advisory Council of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) of Northern Ohio, where she is the immediate Past President of the board. She has been a dedicated member of the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) since 2006.
