While word meaning and sentence comprehension are necessary for understanding how ideas are communicated within the text, the goal of comprehension is to build a deep understanding that goes beyond what is explicitly stated. At the heart of this process is inference generation that is the reader’s ability to integrate information across the texts by using his or her background knowledge to fill in what is implicitly stated. The blueprint provides a structured framework for both intentional and incidental on purpose instruction including routines, strategies and activities, that support accessing, building & integrating background knowledge necessary for creating an overall understanding of the text.
