Comprehending text not only requires accessing word meaning but also working with the syntactic structures and sense of each sentence. This connection between syntax and sentence comprehension is key to working with the language of academic texts. There is often a focus on identifying the building blocks of the sentence that is the parts of speech, phrases and clauses. However, a focus on function or their jobs is critical to understanding their contribution e.g, responses to who or what did what to whom when, where how & why. The blueprint provides a structured framework for both intentional and incidental on purpose instruction including routines, strategies and activities, that support working with how sentences, individually and in combination, contribute to the overall meaning of text.
