Fact Not Fiction: The Science & Structured Literacy Do Address Comprehension! - 1.5 CEs
Nancy Hennessy, M.Ed.

It’s time to acknowledge that the science of reading does address comprehension and structured instructional practices for all students. Let’s examine what the research has revealed about the complexity of comprehension and the critical roles of language skills, cognitive processes, and knowledge sources necessary for constructing & expressing understanding of text. Then, consider how the science can inform an instructional blueprint focused on developing the literacy skills and content goals and the instructional tools necessary for acquiring essential language skills and other contributors to comprehension. Our deep understanding of the complexity of comprehension is the key to teaching our students, whether reading by eye or ear, how to make meaning of the text.
