Unlocking Potential: Strategies for Support Beyond Structured Programs - 1.5 CEs
Kayla Reggio, M.Ed., CALT-QI, LDT

What do we do when our students with dyslexia have completed our structured programs and made significant progress in their reading skills yet still require extensive support to succeed in middle school, high school, and beyond? This presentation will address the challenges faced by older students—particularly those with severe dyslexia—who have completed Orton-Gillingham (OG)-based curricula but continue to struggle with reading fluency and applying their skills in real-world academic settings. While OG-based programs have shown success in building foundational reading skills, fluency remains a barrier for many students as they transition to more complex academic environments.

This session will explore strategies to enhance reading fluency in middle and high school students, focusing on oral reading, scaffolded practice, and individualized feedback. It will also emphasize the importance of integrating technology tools and accommodation into therapeutic settings, empowering students with the support they need to thrive in the classroom and beyond. Practical recommendations will be shared for educators to foster reading fluency, self-confidence, and academic independence in their students. The presentation also explores the prevalence of comorbid conditions, such as ADHD or auditory processing disorders, and offers strategies to navigate these complexities while keeping therapy focused and effective. Participants will gain valuable insights into interpreting comprehensive assessment data and employing norm-referenced progress monitoring to ensure their interventions are on track and producing measurable outcomes.
