Multisensory? Multimodal?
The term multisensory has recently received some attention regarding its role in evidence-based literacy instruction. The word is included in legislation and often referenced as an aspect of dyslexia-specific intervention. The term multimodal has gained traction as another way to describe literacy instruction. We’ll find common ground between both terms and reiterate what that means for teaching and learning.
Intensifying Your Instruction
Most students now have access to evidence-based foundational skills instruction in their schools. What can we do to further intensify that structured literacy instruction for students who need more of it? Adjusting group size and the frequency/duration of instruction are organizational ways to intensify reading intervention. We'll focus on instructional intensifiers that teachers (in the school or private therapy setting) can make within their existing structured literacy approach. Practical applications for intensifying various components of a structured literacy lesson, based on cognitive science, will be shared.
