Description: Success in our fast-paced, high-stakes schools is dependent on executive function processes including setting appropriate goals, thinking flexibly, shifting approaches to problems, as well as organizing and prioritizing time, information, and ideas. Increasing numbers of students, with or without learning and attention challenges, are floundering because they have not been taught strategies to access these critical executive function processes.

This workshop will explore the important role that executive function plays in successful learning across all stages of a student’s development as well as systematic approaches to applying executive function strategies to common academic tasks.

This workshop will also focus on the importance of metacognition and methods for integrating opportunities for self-reflection into executive function strategy instruction. The workshop will include lesson plans, strategy worksheets, handouts, and other materials from the SMARTS Executive Function curriculum.

Participants will be able to:

Describe the important roles of executive function and metacognition in successful learning.

Apply the SMARTS I-SEE framework to executive function strategy instruction, ensuring that strategies are effectively differentiated.
